5/6/15: Stella at the Emerging Writers’ Festival: #writingwhilefemale
The Stella Prize is delighted to be partnering with the Emerging Writers’ Festival on the #writingwhilefemale day, dedicated to celebrating women in writing.
The Stella Prize will present two sessions on Friday 5 June:
12 noon – 1pm: Gendered Genres: Women on Women’s Writing
Ruth Franklin has stated that ‘Men’s novels about suburbia…are about society; women’s novels about suburbia…are about women.’ The term ‘Women’s Fiction’ carries with it implications that female writers write from their specific perspectives as women, leaving men to explore the important, universal questions. Similarly, domestic realism in fiction has often led to women’s writing being boxed in as ‘Chick Lit’, while male writers tackling the domestic, such as Karl Ove Knausgaard, are lauded for their honesty and courage.
Do women tell different stories? Are women writers trapped by their gender? What are the causes for these barriers? How might women go about dismantling them, and does the onus to do so lie with them?
Featuring Aviva Tuffield, Emily Bitto, Louise Swinn and Ellen van Neerven.
2 – 4pm: Stella Reviewing Masterclass
Back by popular demand after two sold-out inaugural sessions at the 2015 Digital Writers’ Festival, we are delighted to announce the return of the Stella Reviewing Masterclass. Hosted by two of Australia’s most respected literary critics, Melinda Harvey and Jo Case, this two hour workshop is an invaluable opportunity for emerging reviewers and book critics to hone their craft.
