Join us for a celebration of women’s writing, as we reflect on the stories and women that inspire and shape our world and announce the longlist of the 2019 Stella Prize.
Hosted by journalist, writer, and SBS presenter Jan Fran, the night will feature readings from five incredible speakers including poet, essayist and legal scholar Alison Whittaker, author and 2017 Stella Prize shortlistee Emily Maguire, bestselling novelist Melina Marchetta, journalist and editor of Guardian Australia Lenore Taylor and writer, activist and comedian Nayuka Gorrie.
Plus, Stella Judges Michelle de Kretser, Kate McClymont, Daniel Browning and Amelia Lush will reveal the twelve books of the 2019 Stella Prize longlist live.

ARTISTS
Alison Whittaker is a Gomeroi poet and legal academic from the floodplains of Gunnedah in NSW. Between 2017-2018, she was a Fulbright scholar at Harvard Law School, where she was named the Dean’s Scholar in Race, Gender and Criminal Law. Her second book, BLAKWORK, was released with Magabala Books in September 2018.

Nayuka Gorrie is a Gunai/Kurnai, Gunditjmara, Wiradjuri and Yorta Yorta freelance and comedy television writer. Their writing centres on black, feminist and queer politics. Emily Maguire is the author of five novels and two non-fiction books. Her latest novel, An Isolated Incident was shortlisted for the 2017 Stella Prize, the ABIA Literary Fiction Book of the Year and the Miles Franklin Literary Award. She works as a teacher and as a mentor to young and emerging writers and is the 2018 Writer-in-Residence at the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. Lenore Taylor is editor of Guardian Australia. She has won two Walkley awards and has twice won the Paul Lyneham Award for excellence in press gallery journalism. Melina Marchetta is the bestselling author of nine novels, which have been published in more than twenty countries. Her work has won multiple awards and she has also written award-winning screenplays and televisions scripts. Her new novel The Place on Dalhousie will be released in April 2019. She lives in Sydney. Jan Fran is a journalist, broadcaster and TV presenter. A former TV journo-turned-VJ, she has shot and produced long-form documentaries from all over the world for SBS TV. She currently hosts The Feed on SBSVICELAND and guest-hosts The Project on Network Ten. Jan is the creator of The Frant – a short, millennial-focused editorial segment where she dissects the news of the day.
Jan appears regularly as a commentator on Sky News and the ABC. She’s appeared on Q&A, ABC Breakfast, Insiders, Lateline, Triple J’s Hack, Paul Murray Live and The Friday Show.
She recently won the 2018 Our Watch Award for Best Use of Social Media for The Feed and The Frant. She was a finalist for the 2018 Walkley for Women’s Leadership in Media and a for Best Television Personality in Cosmo’s 2017 Woman of the Year Award.
