Stella Schools Program manager Bec Kavanagh welcomes students and runs through the day's events.
Winnie is a Tongan writer from Mount Druitt in Western Sydney. Winnie is currently the manager of Sweatshop – a Western Sydney Literacy Movement, and has just graduated from a Bachelor of Arts at Western Sydney University. Winnie’s work has been published in The Vocal, The Big Black Thing, Voiceworks and Griffith Review.
When a lack of political voice leads to disempowerment, disengagement and disadvantage, personal voices speak up. In this panel, three women offer personal testimonies on the politics that affect them. These testimonies will be read live and followed by a panel discussion.
Students can choose between five workshops (all students attend, choose one workshop each)
This workshop will focus on writing poetry for the page. Participants will be lead through different writing exercises and learn how to play with meaning in their poems using tools like line breaks and experiments with metaphor. The workshop will also cover how to share your poems and how to push through being insecure about your work. There will be a repeat of this workshop in the afternoon.
There will be two workshops during this time on slam poetry. Slam poetry gives voice to a range of political and social issues. In this workshop participants will work on a piece about the things that matter to them.
When making space for female voices in male dominated industries, what challenges do women face? How are they treated differently because of their gender? What ideas would we have missed out on if women weren’t in these spaces? And how can we make the way easier for the women of the future?

DATE: 12 October, 2017
VENUE: The Cube Wodonga
This event will take place in various rooms through The Cube Wodonga. Participants should all arrive by 8.45am to attend the first session. Participants will be notified of workshop locations on the day and directed by Stella staff and volunteers.
All participants will have the opportunity to enrol in one 11am workshop and one 1.45pm workshop. A link to pre-register will be sent to everyone with a valid ticket closer to the event. Workshops will remain open until all places are filled; if you are registering for other people too, you must provide individual names and email addresses for each attendee. Workshops are open only to teens – adult ticket holders will remain in the main hall for the duration of the event. Participants can wait to register for workshops on the day but some may be booked out by then.
