Creative reading by Wemba-Wemba and Gunditjmara woman, artist, curator, writer and educator Paola Balla.
What does the world look like when you are Candy Bowers, writer, actor, social-activist, comedian and producer? How do you find the confidence and perspective to trust your own voice amid the noise of everything else?
Whose words decide who we are and how we should live? Can we resist, reimagine, reclaim words to take ownership of our stories and have a say in our future? Candy Bowers, Timmah Ball and Rachel Ang resist the dominant narratives, rebelliously reimagining a piece of writing from the literary canon and demonstrating that stories can change, depending on who's telling them. Followed by a short, hosted discussion and Q&A.
Is the writer invisible, or does the body they write from within inform their writing? Is it possible to move through the world in a body without the world imprinting on it, without the dents left shaping the words the body writes? Why do we care so much about bodies? Jax Jacki Brown, Kali Myers and Elise Grills talk about the way that body image impacts their lives and writing.
In this 45-minute session, two of our Girls Write Up speakers will answer some of the anonymous questions posted in the Ask Me Anything box over the course of the day. This is the chance for audience members to ask questions they’ve always wanted to ask, but never had the opportunity.
