In 2016, the Stella Prize launched the Stella Sparks campaign, inviting all readers to show their support for writing by Australian women.
Stella Sparks will return in January 2017 – stay tuned for more details.
Once they’d made their donations, our 2016 Stella Sparks choose two of the following Australian literary magazines and were sent a back issue of each, with a stylish Stella Sparks tote bag. Each of these publications generously supplied us with some of their favourite past issues, and we were thrilled to be able to pass them on to our Stella Sparks!
If you love what these journals and magazines do, remember to subscribe and support independent Australian publications!
Dumbo Feather
Behind extraordinary ideas, there are extraordinary people. Dumbo Feather is a magazine about these people. Each issue, we scour the globe for those with the drive to make a difference, seeking out those who inspire, excite and thrill us with possibility. Whether they’ve touched millions or just those nearby, what unites them is their passion.
Going Down Swinging
Going Down Swinging is one of Australia’s longest-running and most respected literary journals: publishing digital as well as print and audio anthologies since 1979 and producing sensational, sold-out live events.
Griffith Review
Griffith Review is a high-quality, agenda-setting, quarterly publication, delivering insight into the issues that matter most in a timely, authoritative and engaging fashion.
Its unique model features a mix of essays, memoir, reportage, short fiction, poetry and visual essays by emerging and established authors who tease out the complexity of current events.
Kill Your Darlings
Proudly independent, Kill Your Darlings is Australia’s most lively and entertaining cultural publication. KYD was founded in 2010 by Rebecca Starford and Hannah Kent, and today it comprises a quarterly edition, a website and blog, regular events series, a writers workshop and an online shop.
Meanjin
Now in its 75th year, Meanjin publishes four issues a year of some of Australia’s best essays, fiction, poetry and memoir.
Overland
Overland is the most radical of Australia’s long-standing literary and cultural magazines. Its mission is to foster new, original and progressive work exploring the relationship between politics and culture, especially literature, and to bring that work to as many people as possible.
The Canary Press
The Canary Press was founded in 2013 by Robert Skinner and Andy Josselyn in an elaborate attempt to avoid doing the dishes. It is now run by a small team of magazine moguls in Melbourne, Australia. The magazine is released quarterly and distributed nationally. It features new writers alongside some of the finest short story writers from Australia and overseas, such as Jim Shepard, Margo Lanagan, George Saunders and Annie Proulx.
The Lifted Brow
The Lifted Brow is a quarterly magazine that publishes work from writers and visual artists who hail from Australia and the world.
They also make a digital version of the magazine, broken up into instalments, delivered via their app. They publish commentary, literary criticism and humour writing on their website.
