In 2016, the Stella Prize launched the Stella Sparks campaign, inviting all readers to show their support for writing by Australian women.

Once they’d made their donations, our 2016 Stella Sparks choose two of the following Australian literary magazines and were sent a back issue of each, with a stylish Stella Sparks tote bag. Each of these publications generously supplied us with some of their favourite past issues, and we were thrilled to be able to pass them on to our Stella Sparks!

Kill Your Darlings
Proudly independent, Kill Your Darlings is Australia’s most lively and entertaining cultural publication. KYD was founded in 2010 by Rebecca Starford and Hannah Kent, and today it comprises a quarterly edition, a website and blog, regular events series, a writers workshop and an online shop.
Meanjin
Now in its 75th year, Meanjin publishes four issues a year of some of Australia’s best essays, fiction, poetry and memoir.
Overland
Overland is the most radical of Australia’s long-standing literary and cultural magazines. Its mission is to foster new, original and progressive work exploring the relationship between politics and culture, especially literature, and to bring that work to as many people as possible.
The Canary Press
The Canary Press was founded in 2013 by Robert Skinner and Andy Josselyn in an elaborate attempt to avoid doing the dishes. It is now run by a small team of magazine moguls in Melbourne, Australia. The magazine is released quarterly and distributed nationally. It features new writers alongside some of the finest short story writers from Australia and overseas, such as Jim Shepard, Margo Lanagan, George Saunders and Annie Proulx.
The Lifted Brow
The Lifted Brow is a quarterly magazine that publishes work from writers and visual artists who hail from Australia and the world.
They also make a digital version of the magazine, broken up into instalments, delivered via their app. They publish commentary, literary criticism and humour writing on their website.
