“Carrie’s second novel, Mateship with Birds, is a triumph of noticing and, having noticed, of carefully, meticulously assembling the things that have been noticed into a novel that shows, on almost every page, not just an eye for detail, but also a conviction that every detail is in some way connected and that the connections have meaning.” The Stella Prize Judging Panel
Carrie Tiffany is a former park ranger who lives in Melbourne and works as an agricultural journalist. Her second novel, Mateship with Birds, won the inaugural Stella Prize, the Christina Stead Prize, and was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award. Her award-winning debut novel, Everyman’s Rules for Scientific Living, was published in 2005.
“The Sunlit Zone is an original and surprising book combining two genres rarely seen out together: speculative fiction and the verse novel. Set on the coast of Melbourne between 2020 and 2050, the novel uses loosely structured verse and a conversational voice to evoke the power and beauty of the ocean and produce a casual-seeming style that belies the amount of craft and care in the writing.” The Stella Prize Judging Panel
Lisa Jacobson is an award-winning poet and fiction writer. The Sunlit Zone was shortlisted for the inaugural Stella Prize, the 2012 Wesley Michel Wright Prize and, as a manuscript, for the 2009 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards. In 2011 she won the Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize. Lisa is an Honorary Research Fellow at La Trobe University.
Jacinta Halloran is a GP and a writer, and a founding member of the Stella Prize.
