The 2014 Stella Prize Opens for Entries
After a very successful first year, the Stella Prize opens for entries for 2014 on Monday 23 September 2013.
The $50,000 Prize will be presented for the best work of literature, fiction or non-fiction, published in 2013 by an Australian woman.
Entries are open until 5 p.m. AEDT on Monday 21 October. This year entry forms can be completed online. See our Guidelines & Submission page for details.
We are pleased to announce the 2014 Stella Prize judging panel: critic and writer Kerryn Goldsworthy (chair); journalist and broadcaster Annabel Crabb; author and academic Brenda Walker; bookseller Fiona Stager; and writer and lecturer Tony Birch.
We are delighted to have Kerryn and Fiona on board for another year, and thrilled to welcome the huge and diverse talents of Annabel, Brenda and Tony to the 2014 Stella Prize.
Last year we received almost 200 entries; we are all eager to see what this year will bring.
The winner of the inaugural Stella Prize was Carrie Tiffany for Mateship with Birds, who says of winning:
The prize money has bought me precious time to write. It is an investment in my future books; time that I can buy myself out of the workforce and concentrate on my craft. It has also brought my writing great attention from readers and critics. I’m sure this attention has increased my standing in other prizes for which I have since been nominated. There is a significant flow-on effect to winning a major literary prize, a word- of-mouth excitement around the book and my writing that has led to increased book sales, speaking engagements, festival appearances and even a residential fellowship.
