About the Stella Prize Schools Program
Nearly 70% of Victoria’s Year 12 English texts are by male authors. And Australian women writers are still underrepresented in the review pages and as literary prize winners. How will the next generation of women see writing as a career that’s equally for them when male writers are the status quo? And what about the next generation of readers?
To change this culture and inspire students – girls and boys alike – the Stella Prize has developed its own schools program.
This exciting new program for girls and boys Years 7–12 offers:
- school visits by notable Australian writers, educators and publishers
- hands-on writing workshops
- teaching notes on all Stella Prize shortlisted books (for Years 10–12)
- resources for all secondary-school levels
- PD for teachers and librarians

The Stella Prize Schools Program launch speakers
CATE KENNEDY is a prizewinning author of two short-story collections, Dark Roots and Like a House on Fire, which was shortlisted for the 2013 Stella Prize. She is also the author of a novel, The World Beneath; a travel memoir, Sing, and Don’t Cry; and the poetry collections Joyflight, Signs of Other Fires and The Taste of River Water, which won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Poetry in 2011.
LEANNE HALL is the author of two novels for young adults, the Text Prize-winning This Is Shyness and its sequel Queen of the Night. Leanne has had shorter pieces published in Meanjin, Best Australian Stories and the anthology Growing Up Asian In Australia. Leanne has worked in the arts, publishing and as a bookseller, but her enduring passion is for youth literature.
TONY BIRCH was a judge of the 2014 Stella Prize. He is the author of Shadowboxing, Father’s Day and Blood, which was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award. His latest collection of short stories is The Promise. Tony teaches writing at the University of Melbourne.
BEC KAVANAGH is a writer, reviewer and educator. A YA specialist, she was the founder of A Thousand Words Festival, which celebrated young adult fiction. Bec is the Education Resources Development Officer for Stella Prize Schools Program.
