1/11/2016: My Brilliant Bookclub @ DWF
The Digital Writers’ Festival is partnering with the Stella Prize to present My Brilliant Bookclub.
Stella Miles Franklin’s legacy is stamped all over the Australian literary landscape. But how many of us are actually familiar with her writing?
This is a chance to explore – or tear apart – the Australian canon from its beginnings. Franklin’s 1901 novel My Brilliant Career is a passionate, fast-paced and often funny protofeminist romance, which depicts rural Australia on the brink of entering a new era of federation. The land is harsh, the racism casual, the class system unforgiving, and the gender roles strict – but made for breaking.
The DWF bookclub will be posting the text of My Brilliant Career, in full, on their website. Using the genius.com interface, readers can engage with the text online by annotating the book with their thoughts and critiques and respond to what others have posted.
The event will be kicked off by annotations from Stella Prize Manager Veronica Sullivan and writer Kylie Maslen from November 1st.
Ahead of the bookclub commencing, Veronica and DWF Director Jane Howard spoke to Book Thingo about Miles Franklin’s legacy, the place of My Brilliant Career in the Australian canon, and how readers can get involved with the event from the comfort of their own couch.
