Talking Back!
To complement Girls Write Up this year, the Stella Schools Program has introduced an online zine, Talking Back!
Talking Back! publishes creative responses by students who attended Girls Write Up, and allows teens to engage with each other’s work, as well as share their work with the wider community. The zine showcases work produced in workshops on the day, along with pieces sent through by students in the days and weeks after, inspired by their time at Girls Write Up.
Talking Back! is an opportunity to extend conversations about this year’s theme, ‘the politics and performance of language’, beyond the event itself and allows students to creatively respond to and apply what they learnt at Girls Write Up. Talking Back! gives a voice to teens and reveals how artistic work and storytelling can be used to unpack complex issues around gender inequality and race.
The zine has already received some brave and powerful submissions, which we’re proud to publish — from the graphic narratives produced in workshops run by Rachel Ang, to poetry inspired by Soreti Kadir’s slam poetry class.
Talking Back! can be seen here and shared with the #GWU17 hashtag.
