Evelyn Araluen on Writing Self Care
What does it mean to be a young person living through the present moment? How can we make sense of our experiences through writing? And how can this creative process be part of a broader project of self care?
In her Digital Workshop, 2022 Stella Prize-winning author Evelyn Araluen looks at these questions and provides tools, tips, and activities for young people to help find and use their creative voice.
In introducing her workshop, Evelyn says:
“The point of all the exercises and discussions I’m going to have with you is not to make the world around you seem palatable, appropriate, understandable, tolerable – particularly not when we know that the world is very much full of injustice right now. But rather to be honest, to bear witness, and to develop your language for talking about the world that you live in.
The language you get out of these kinds of activities and experiences should all be part of a broader project of making sure that you are able to speak to, and of, and for, and about, the time that you are living in. That you are able to look at what we are going through collectively, or what you might be going through individually, in the eye and say: I know you, I can talk about you, here is what I have written.”
